Green Party Meeting in Boulder

The Green Party will hold a meeting for registered Greens and those interested in the Green Party, in Boulder on Wednesday, October 3, 2007, at the Boulder Public Library (1000 Canyon Blvd.) from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M.

The purpose of the gathering is to reinvigorate the Boulder Greens organization in preparation for the 2008 elections.

The Green Party nationally and in Colorado has been the only political party that has from the beginning been forthrightly opposed to the war on and the U.S. occupation of Iraq.

The Green Party is also the one political party that has made the environment and mitigating the effects of global climate change a top priority.

The 2008 Colorado U.S. Senate race and a possible Green Party candidate for the 2nd Congressional District will be on the agenda.

Non-Violence Training

Submitted by Tony D'Lallo, Adams-Jeffco Green Chair

The Colorado Citizens for Peace is hosting a non-violence training this Saturday, September 29th, at the Arvada United Methodist Church on 6750 Carr Street, Arvada, Colorado (MAP). The times are from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. Non-violence training is taught by the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice.

The Green Party's first key value is non-violence and it stands as one of our greatest pillars of strength. This is what separates our party from the other political parties. Our commitment to non-domination of oppressed and poor people; demilitarization, and creative ways to deal with conflict such as the consensus process offers alternatives to force and various forms of violence. Please join us in this valuable training exercise on how to peacefully deal with confrontations and potential violence during peace vigils.

The CCFP is asking for a small donation of 5 dollars or whatever you can give to help defray the cost of using the room.

52 Pairs of Combat Boots Representing U.S. Soldiers From Colorado Who Have Fallen in the Iraq War

Many local Greens are involved in helping to organize this event in Arvada. Greens were instrumental in the national 'Eyes Wide Open' exhibit that visited Denver last summer.

Eyes Wide Open: The Cost of War to Colorado focuses on the specific cost of the war to the state of Colorado. The exhibit includes 52 pairs of boots representing fallen servicemen and women from Colorado, and a visual representation of the Iraqi civilian casualties. The exhibit is part of AFCS's national Eyes Wide Open: The Cost of War network.

What are You Waiting For?

Colorado progressives, peace advocates, liberals, moderates, and unaffilated voters got to see yesterday the 'Republicrat' political party in all its shame.

Though most Americans want an end to the Bush-ordered military occupation of Iraq, the leading Dimocrat candidates for president stood pretty much with Bush/Cheney on not ending the U.S. armed presence in that country in the near future.

Also yesterday, as expected, Colorado's two U.S. Senators, radical Republican Wayne Allard and Dimocrat Ken Salazar voted in favor of a slightly modified Lieberman-Kyle Iran resolution that ratcheted-up the war rhetoric against Iran. No word yet on how U.S. Senate aspirant, Dimocrat Mark Udall, stands on this proposal.

Finally, Mark Udall, John Salazar and Ed Perlmutter cast very wimpy votes in the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday. They voted to condemn an ad in a newspaper because the radical Republicans scared them into doing so.

Wimpydimsbutton

Hey, you guys, it should be the job of the Congress to bring our troops home, not legislate free speech.

Here's the roll call vote.

It is abundantly clear that 'politics as usual' is not going to end the U.S. occupation of Iraq anytime soon or that the Dimocrats in Washington are going to act boldly to prevent a Bush-ordered bombing of Iran.

That means you if want real, genuine, principled change and reform, you need to take concrete action -- register as a Green Party voter -- and let the 'politics as usual' politicians of the two big, establishment, elitists parties know that we want our country back.

The leading Democratic White House hopefuls conceded Wednesday night they cannot guarantee to pull all U.S. combat troops from Iraq by the end of the next presidential term in 2013.

"I think it's hard to project four years from now," said Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois in the opening moments of a campaign debate in the nation's first primary state.

"It is very difficult to know what we're going to be inheriting," added Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York.

"I cannot make that commitment," said former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina. ...

By a vote 76-22, the Senate passed the Lieberman-Kyl amendment, which threatens to “combat, contain and [stop]” Iran via “military instruments.” Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) called the amendment “Cheney’s fondest pipe dream” and said it could “read as a backdoor method of gaining Congressional validation for military action.”

UPDATE
Before the vote today, changes were made to the original amendment, with paragraphs three and four taken out completely. This paragraph was also added at the end:

“Secretary of Defense Robert Gates stated on September 16, 2007 that “I think that the administration believes at this point that continuing to try and deal with the Iranian threat, the Iranian challenge, through diplomatic and economic means is by the preferable approach. That the one we are using. We always say all options are on the table, but clearly, the diplomatic and economic approach is the one that we are pursuing.”

A society reveals its values, priorities and distribution of power in the way its rulers punish deviant behavior. Here are some examples for you to ponder:

Members of Congress were in an uproar recently over a MoveOn.Org political advertisement in the New York Times titled “General Petraeus or General Betray Us?” The following copy alerted readers to their belief that he may likely testify before Congress as a political General reflecting the rosy views on the Iraq war-quagmire by his commander-in-chief, George W. Bush.

How dare MoveOn.Org criticize a General in the midst of’ Bush’s war of choice, growled Republicans and some Democrats as the Senators rushed to overwhelmingly vote for a resolution condemning the ad?

How dare those many Americans who criticized Civil War Generals, World War Two Generals, Korean War Generals (remember General Douglas MacArthur) and Vietnam War Generals (remember General William Westmoreland)?

This kind of criticism inside Army, inside the Congress and among the citizenry has been as American as apple pie.

How come a similar uproar has not come forth about the many female U.S. soldiers in Iraq raped or sexually harassed by male soldiers who are often their superiors? Where are the generals to crack down on these outrages? This story was documented in a long cover story in the New York Times Magazine some months ago, citing numerous sources, including the Pentagon. ... MORE<

Undeclared Green Polls in Colorado U.S. Senate Race

Bob_kinsey

In a poll for the 2008 Colorado U.S. Senate race conducted for Republican candidate Bob Schaffer, possible contender for the Green Party nomination, Bob Kinsey, received seven percent.

According to the poll memo:

Key findings of the poll are:

* The contest is tight: A trial -heat ballot, asked early in each interview, shows the race “too close to call,” with Bob Schaffer trailing Mark Udall by 2 percentage points, 38%--40%. A probable Green Party candidate, Bob Kinsey , garnered 7% of the v ote. Without the Green candidate in the race, the two-way ballot split would be 40% for Schaffer versus 45% for
Udall.
Download SchafferPoll.pdf

Kinsey, a former schoolteacher, minister and Marine, was the Colorado Green Party candidate in 2004 in the 4th Congressional District. At an Adams-Jefferson Green Party meeting earlier this month, Bob noted that issues important to him are ending the U.S. occupation of Iraq and nuclear disarmament. Also of great concern to Bob are energy policy and global warming.

A Green Kinsey candidacy would give Colorado voters a genuine choice for the U.S. Senate in 2008. Udall has materially supported the Bush-ordered occupation of Iraq and Schaffer continues to tow the Bush line for an open-ended U.S. military presence in Iraq. Kinsey unequivocally supports bring American troops home.

Busy Adams-Jeffco Meeting

The Adams-Jefferson Green Party had a busy and productive meeting on Thursday, September 6, 2007.

The meeting was held at the Arvada Library and was well attended.

First on the agenda were remarks by Bob Kinsey, possible candidate for the Colorado Green Party nomination to run for the United States Senate next year. Issues important to Bob are ending the U.S. occupation of Iraq and nuclear disarmament. Also of great concern to Bob are energy policy and global warming. Bob indicated that he would make a final decision on whether or not to run in just a few weeks.

Cindy Lowry of Colorado Citizens for Peace told the group about the special peace vigil planned to coincide with the Arvada Harvest Festival this Saturday, September 8. She announced a September 29, non-violence training to be conducted by the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center at Arvada United Methodist Church. Finally, Cindy said that the Eyes Wide Open will be coming to Arvada on Saturday, October 13, 2008 at McIlvoy Park. See the Colorado Citizens for Peace web site for more details on all of these events.

Colorado Greens Will Be Heading to Chicago in 2008

Link: Greens Choose Chicago for 2008 | Green Party of the United States

The Green Party of the United States will hold its 2008 national nominating convention in Chicago, Illinois.

Delegates from state Green Parties and caucuses in the party's National Committee completed their vote yesterday, with Chicago taking the lead over Detroit, Minneapolis, and Oakland.

Greens from all four cities had submitted proposals for the 2008 convention. The National Committee chose the site using ranked choice voting (also called instant run-off voting; see FairVote.org), a voting reform the party also recommends for single seat offices like governor or mayor.

Chicago's proposal can be read at www.greenconvention2008.com. The convention will take place July 10 to 13, 2008.

"We're very proud that Greens will choose our 2008 presidential nominee in Chicago," said Patrick Kelly, media coordinator for the Illinois Green Party and coordinator for the Chicago bid. "Our Green candidate for Governor of Illinois, Rich Whitney, drew over 10% in the 2006 election -- after Gov. Blagojevich spent $800,000 in taxpayers money trying to keep the Green Party off the ballot. The 2008 convention will show Chicago that we're here to stay."

"Our intention is to run a strong presidential campaign with our nominee on every ballot line in the country," added Phil Huckelberry, co-chair of the Green Party of the United States and Chicagoan.

Green leaders are planning a press conference in Chicago next week, at which they will discuss the convention site and the Green Party's plans for 2008 in greater detail. Press conference details will be announced soon.

"We were quite impressed with the presentations from all four cities, and we know Greens faced a hard choice," said Ruth Weill, co-chair of the Green Party's Annual National Meeting Committee. "We thank all of them and congratulate Chicago, and we look forward to seeing everyone -- and the media too -- in Chicago next summer."

The Green Party held its 2007 national meeting in Reading, Pennsylvania, in July. Several candidates for the Green presidential nomination introduced themselves to the party during the meeting, and more candidates are expected to announce soon.
