Cynthia McKinney Announces for President

Colorado Greens will have several candidates seeking the party's presidential nomination to choose from in 2008. Yesterday saw the announcement of a well know candidate, Cynthia McKinney, former Congresswoman from Georgia.

Here are links to web sites and videos that we have found for the better known Green candidates.

Former Georgia congresswoman Cynthia McKinney is on the political comeback trail again. This time, she's running for president.

In a speech posted on her campaign Web site, runcynthiarun.org, McKinney, 52, ended weeks of speculation and officially announced her run as a Green Party candidate. She sounded the theme "Come Home To The Green Party" while attacking both major parties as supporters of the war in Iraq and tools of corporate interests.

"The Democrats, no different than their Republican counterpart, eat out of the hands of corrupt lobbyists and feed at the same corporate trough," McKinney says in the video. "I am proud to say the Green Party is my new political home."

In recent weeks, McKinney has traveled to campaign rallies and fund-raisers in Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin trying to organize party support and get her name on state ballots. She said she plans to campaign in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. ... MORE

Green on Federal Heights City Council

Tanya_ishikawa2

Tanya Ishikawa was appointed unanimously to the Federal Heights City Council in Colorado on Tuesday, December 18, 2007 The member of the Adams-Jefferson Green Party chapter will serve two years, the remaining term of the Ward I councilmember who vacated the seat when elected mayor.

Tanya was chosen by the six councilmembers, from five residents of Federal Heights Ward I who put in requests for the appointment. She was immediately sworn into office and voted on the issues on the council's agenda for the evening (except for two which she felt unprepared to decide so quickly).

Thank you to the Green Party members who supported Tanya in attaining this seat. She is excited to to help make her city an economically and environmentally sustainable place to live.

Joyous Metro Greens Holiday Party

A special message about the metro Denver Greens 2007 holiday gathering from Tom Green:

I want to thank everyone who attended the Green Holiday Party on Friday, December 14 -- with special thanks to Claire Ryder for her great organizing skills, and to John Sigler for obtaining such a great party room.

Also, many thanks to Kevin Alumbaugh for generously providing everyone with a copy of his band's great new CD, Egg Planet which I enjoyed listening to yesterday.

Thanks to all for providing such great food and, more importantly, for your fellowship and camaraderie. I especially appreciated hearing everyone share why they became active in the Green Party, and especially those who elaborated more fully on their personal experiences.

As I reflected on the party while meditatiing this morning, I am very pleased to be part of such a diverse group of committed and concerned human beings. I also concluded that as a practicing Buddhist, the Green Party is the only suitable party for me. For example, three of the five precepts that lay Buddhists maintain are:

* abstaining from killing [other sentient beings]
* abstaining from stealing (or taking what is not given)
* abstaining from speaking falsely
Yes, indeed, I am glad I am a Green!

Zing! More Money for Iraq Occupation

Pretty funny.

The Congressional Democrats of 2007 ... captured almost seventy years ago in a one-liner from Bob Hope in The Ghost Breakers.

Now, the part that is not so funny.

Link: Congress Authorizes War Funds and Sends Bill to Bush | Reuters/Yahoo! News

The Democratic-led Congress authorized more Iraq war spending on Friday, sending President George W. Bush a defense bill requiring no change in strategy after failing again to impose a timetable for U.S. troop withdrawals.

The defense policy bill, approved 90-3 by the U.S. Senate, also expanded the size of the U.S. Army and set conditions on the Bush administration's plan to build a missile defense system in Europe.

The measure already had passed the House of Representatives and now goes to Bush, who is expected to sign it into law. It authorizes Pentagon programs expected to cost $506.9 billion during fiscal 2008, which began in October.

The bill authorized another $189.4 billion for the Iraq and Afghan wars, for which Congress has already approved some $600 billion. But it does not deliver the new money. That is done by appropriations legislation at the center of a big dispute on Capitol Hill.
